Mayor OlympicsEnStahl got a letter from the United States Olympic Committee to gauge if Pittsburgh would be interested in hosting the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
Luke said - “It wasn't long ago that we hosted a safe and successful G-20 Summit, and now, we may have the opportunity to bid for the 2024 Olympics, Pittsburgh should feel very proud and honored to have come this far. Certainly there would be extraordinary obstacles and challenges to meet in putting a bid together, We will reach out to community members to gauge their interest.”
The USOC sent letters to the mayors of 35 cities to gauge interest in a potential bid to bring the Summer Olympics back to the USA. New York and Chicago both failed to receieve the bid for 2012 and 2016.
Here where things get a little shaky
The letter that was sent from the USOC committee CEO Scott Blackmun lists the infrastructure and venue requirements for a host city.
- Pittsburgh would need to have at least 45,000 hotel rooms
- Space somewhere for an Olympic Village that sleeps 16,500 people and a local workforce of up to 200,000.
- Also hosting the Olympics would require an operating budget of more than $3 billion and that is not including costs for new venue construction and infrastructure improvements.
So take that laundry list for what it is...Still pretty awesome that Pittsburgh gets mentioned.
Haha and we have a logo from our buddy Josh.
