In an interview/article she wrote for the New York Times Angelina Jolie revealed that she underwent a double mastectomy after learning she carried the BRCA1 gene, which dramatically increases a woman's risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.
Angelina said - "My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87% to under 5%, I can tell my children that they don't need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer."
Her mother died at the age of 56 from ovarian cancer.
Angelina told the New York Times it was a preventative procedure that was proactive and her medical choice and she chose to share her story because there are many women who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer.
